Voice overs for radio, television, e-Learning, safety presentations, "On-hold" messages, etc...
I was born in historic Natchez Mississippi in the mid 1950's. The town sits on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River.
It was in the late 1960's when I was in Jr. High School that I caught a devastating virus that was going around at the time.
DJF, as the virus is known, was affecting some of my closest friends. But, I had a case of it far much severe than anyone else. The virus is called "Disc Jockey Fever" and there is only one cure...get into radio! At first I had my own radio station in the basement, complete with a wall heater that I used as a reverb unit. I placed a speaker at the top of the unit and a microphone at the bottom. Boy did that sound good!
My first radio job came in 1969 at WNAT and WQNZ-FM in Natchez. I also worked for WMIS as the afternoon drive announcer while in High School.
In 1972 I went on to college at Mississippi State University to major in Communications. While in college I worked the morning show at WKOR in Starkville Mississippi. Later I became Program Director at WSSO, also in Starkville.
In 1976 I moved on to Jackson Mississippi and took a job as Midday Air Personality and Production Director at WJDX, the most listened to radio station in the state!
In 1979 I was offered a Program Director job back in Starkville Mississippi at WSSO and WSMU FM. I took it but a few months later was hired at WHKW in Fayette Alabama and later became Program Director. The station was physically located in Kennedy and served Tuscaloosa, Al and Columbus, MS. It was a 120 mile round trip to work and back, but that's just one of the symptoms of "DJF" and I managed to do that for 2 years, but did consider hopping the train every now and then!
After tiring of driving so much, I moved on to Pensacola Florida in 1981 to work the Midday shift at WOWW 107. I eventually became Assistant Program Director and Music Director there. I worked for WOWW for 11 years and was in Pensacola for 21 years working at various radio stations including WXBM as Production Director, Morning sidekick at WWRO and Program Director at COOL 107.
It was in 1982 while in Pensacola, I was lucky enough to started providing voice overs for ad agencies. I operated a successful business called "Real to Reel Audio Productions" voicing and producing award winning commercials for radio and television.
In 2002, my wife Ann and I decided to head to the mountains of North Carolina. I continued to have problems with my seemingly incurable illness, DJF, and continued to work at radio stations KICKS 103.3 in Lenoir as afternoon air personality and as music director and midday air personality at WOXL in Asheville.
Finally, in 2007, the illness subsided and now am totally free of Disc Jockey Fever, however I now has VOF, "Voice Over Fever" and operate my business "John Weeks Audio" out of my private studio in the hills of East Tennessee.
If you or if you know of someone who is a victim of "DJF", contact me and I'll be glad to offer the support needed to overcome this tragic illness!
(as you can see from my photo, side effects may include but are not limited to hearing loss, hair loss, loss of sanity and unemployment)
